It changed when online gaming went mainstream. When the average gamer went from being a nerd/kid that is amazed with the game, the gameplay and the CHALLENGE of playing it. Back when the average ping was 250 and there was no pushlatency (prediction code that simulates no lag), people played hard and enjoyed their game more. There were cheaters, people with huge advantages… but gaming was still fun. The sense of accomplishment, perseverance.. the innovation of new tactics and techniques, that’s one of the things that kept us going. And you know what else?

The community was tight, everyone knew everyone else. Even with a small community, the servers were always full. There was a LACK of servers. Nowadays, there’s 1 server per 3 players. It seems like everyone’s grandmother has a server, so you get thousands of empty servers. Back then? Try to find a decent quake server that wasn’t full at 2 am. People played for honor, for respect. Your clan name actually meant something when you went on a server. When joining a server, you would have 6-7 people say “hey man!”. Its when gaming went mainstream that everything changed.

The mainstream crowd became spoiled. Games were exclusively designed to be ‘newbie’ friendly. People got used to having high speed connections with improved latency, to the point where people who have a 20 ping and amazing client side prediction will STILL blame the connection. They’ll blame the game as well, ‘how is this POS game designed, I should of made that shot’. The major aspect that spoiled it was that games became ‘easier’ to keep everyone on the same level. Think of CS 1.6, think of CS:Source, Battlefield 2142, where everyone is ‘average’. Where its almost impossible to make your team win by yourself. The mainstream games are made so that even a newbie can kill a veteran player. So what’s the point of being good at it ?

The reason people love RPGs is so they can build up their character…. FPS games were along the same lines where, with experience, you could build up YOURSELF. A level 70 player would completely own a level 40 player any day of the year. In FPS, a veteran player SHOULD own an average player any day of the year, but its not the case. You know what’s worse?

There HAS been games designed with experts in mind. But when they are launched, it never ‘picks up’. Mainstream players get tired quickly of dying and go back to their original game where they can be average again (wonder why CS is so huge?).

Gone are the days where I can go into a RANDOM/NEW server and STILL know everyone.
Gone are the days where a pro player can dominate the entire server, without dying once.

This is why I don’t game anymore, this is why I only post news articles now.
